Abrasion Resistance

Resistance of a surface to mechanical stress such as stirring or scraping, shaking and scrubbing test.

Anodized Aluminium

Oxidation of the Aluminium surface through an electrochemical process. Leads to higher hardness and better performance.

BfR Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung (formerly BGA)

German consumer health protection agency. Basis is the LFGB and the Recommendation LI.

Coil Coating Application

Coating of aluminium, steel or stainless steel, mainly for bakeware applications. Metal coils are unrolled, pre-treated, coated, baked and rolled up again. Discs or other shapes are stamped out of the strip or sheet and formed into the final shape.

Curtain Coat Application

Aluminium discs are pre-coated by passing through one or two curtains of liquid paint. After baking the coated discs are pressed or deep-drawn into the final shape.

Easy to Clean Property

Surfaces that can be cleaned easily but do not reach the performance of interior PTFE Non Stick coatings. Preferably used for decorative exteriors of cookware.

Electrolytic chromium coated steel ort in free steel preferred substrate for high temperature coil coating applications

FDA Food and Drug Administration (USA)

This American authority does not provide any regulation for direct food contact of cooking utensils at high temperatures like the BfR. There is even an exemption clause for the private use of cookware. A choice of materials is listed in 21CFR175.300. Some raw materials for food contact are listed under different paragraphs of 21CFR. Thus, an FDA approval of raw materials for high temperature Non Stick applications does not exist. Cooking or baking temperatures are not subject to any FDA regulation. There exists only the so-called GRAS-list, "generally recognized as safe".

FEP Fluoroethylenepropylene Copolymer

Melt-processable thermoplastic fluoropolymer with limited temperature resistance. Only to be used for bakeware applications.

Framework Regulation EC 1935/2004

European regulation for materials that come into direct contact with food. (Regulations 80/590/EWG and 89/109 EWG have been cancelled)

Inorganic porcelain enamel-basecoat, especially for steel cookware.

LFGB (formerly LMBG Lebensmittel-, Bedarfsgegenstände- und Futtermittelgesetzbuch)

German regulatory code for food, consumer goods and animal feed. §30 says that houseware articles should not present any health risks for consumers.

LGA QualiTest GmbH

Independent German testing institute for the quality approval of household equipment. GREBLON® coatings have LGA certificates.

Non Stick

No wetting of a surface by oil, fat or water containing material. This prevents the sticking of food during baking, frying and final cleaning.

Non Stick Coating (GREBLON®)

One or several coating layers to upgrade surface properties. A NSC consists of a binder resin, a release component (PTFE, Silicone), pigments and hard fillers.

PFA Perfluoroalkoxy copolymer

Melt-processable thermoplastic fluoropolymer for improving the corrosion resistance of non-stick coatings. Temperature resistance is limited to 250 °C for food contact.

PFOA Perfluorooctanoicacid

Emulsifier for the polymerisation of fluoropolymers that persist in the environment. GREBLON®-Non Stick coatings are free from any PFOA.

Plasma Hard Coat

Ceramic layer preferably used on cast aluminium.

PTFE Polytetrafluoroethylene

Thermoplastic, but not melt processable polymer with extraordinary chemical resistance and temperature stability. Main component of nearly all Non Stick coatings. Temperature resistance is limited to 250 °C for food contact.

Recommendation LI

This is a positive list of raw materials for high temperature food contact applications (max 250 °C for cookware and 180 °C for bakeware) including analytics, threshold limit values etc. to meet the requirements of LFGB.

Roller Coat Application

Aluminium discs are pre-coated by passing through several roller-coating stations. After baking the coated discs are pressed or deep-drawn into the final shape.

Sol Gel Technique

Wet organic process for the production of ceramic coatings. This is achieved by using a nano scale sol, based on organo-metallic polymers that build a 3-dimensional gel. The ceramic layer is finally formed by a baking process at moderate temperatures.

Stiftung Warentest

STIFTUNG WARENTEST is an organisation for testing consumer goods. It was founded in 1964 by the German government and authorizes independent testing institutes to inspect products and services according to scientific standards.

TFE Tetrafluoroethylene

Monomer for the production of fluoropolymers.
